Protecting your pets when a crisis strikes

Emergencies can happen without warning, and being prepared helps ensure your furry, feathered, or small companions stay safe while you focus on your own care. MASA members know they’re protected for emergency medical transport costs, but MASA also offers support for your pets if you’re suddenly hospitalized away from home. Here’s how to plan ahead and make the most of your protections.

Build a pet emergency kit

Just as you would pack for yourself, your pet's essentials should be ready to go:

• Food and water for at least 3–5 days
• Medications with clear instructions
• Copies of vet records, vaccination history, and any special care instructions
• A leash, carrier, or harness for safe handling

Keep these items together in an easy-to-grab bag or bin, and make sure all family members know where it is.

When you’re away from home

If you’re planning to head out of town, consider the possibility of unexpected situations where you might be hospitalized or separated from your pet:

• Arrange care for your pet with a trusted friend, neighbor, or family member, in case you can’t return home
• Leave clear instructions for feeding, medications, and daily routines
• Familiar items, like a favorite toy or blanket, can comfort your pet in new environments
• Carry a wallet card listing pets and emergency contacts in case you’re incapacitated

Our Pet Return Transport Protection, available with some MASA plans, can help by covering eligible costs to bring your pet home or to a safe caregiver if you are hospitalized. This membership benefit applies to up to two (2) animals per member and can include commercial flights or common carriers when appropriate.

Everyday pet safety

In addition to kits and planning for heading away from home, some simple steps every day can make a big difference:

• Display a “Pets Inside” sticker on your window or door so first responders know animals are present
• Include pets in your family’s emergency plans, evacuation routes, and emergency contacts
• Consider downloading the Red Cross Pet First Aid App (iOS and Android)
