Transportation Interruption Expense Protection
Trip disruptions can quickly become stressful and expensive, especially when they happen far from home. Fortunately, if an unexpected situation outside the United States causes your flight to be delayed, canceled, or missed, MASA’s Transportation Interruption Expense Protection protects you. Included in our Emergency Shield membership plans, this protection helps reimburse eligible out-of-pocket transportation interruption expenses.
What is Transportation Interruption Expense Protection?
If a serious emergency outside the United States disrupts your plans, MASA may reimburse up to $5,000 in eligible out-of-pocket transportation expenses. For example, your flight is delayed more than three hours, canceled, or interrupted due to situations like severe weather, terrorism, or even a medical emergency you experienced while abroad.
Eligible expenses may include non-refundable transportation costs, cancellation penalties, deposits, or rebooking expenses related to the interruption.
To receive reimbursement, members must provide documentation related to the trip interruption. This protection is limited to two reimbursements per consecutive 12-month period beginning from the plan effective date. Coverage is available while outside the United States, subject to prior trip notice requirements and destination-based exclusions.
Why do I need Transportation Interruption Expense Protection?
Even the most carefully planned trips can be disrupted without warning. A sudden illness, a natural disaster, an unexpected airline cancellation, or any other emergency abroad can leave visitors scrambling to adjust their flights and cover the unexpected costs.
Unfortunately, rebooking internationally or recovering prepaid transportation expenses can quickly add up, especially during international emergencies or peak seasons. This protection helps ease the financial burden associated with those interruptions, so you can manage disruptions with total calmness and peace of mind.
